Joe Dawson

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: If your name is really David, why do people call you Joe?

A: The short answer is that I was named after my father and my family had to call me something else to distinguish the two of us. But there's more to it than that. I was not only named after my father, I was nicknamed after his nickname.

As a child, he was called "Dog" by his friends. When he first saw me behind the glass after I was born, he said, with a keen sense of symmetry, "Hello, Jo Jo." This was a reference to the Barnum and Bailey sideshow attraction "Jo Jo the Dog-Faced Boy", a member of the circus troupe for some years. The name stuck. For years I was Jo Jo, until I shortened it to Joe when I turned 16.

Q: Why don't you have more questions in your FAQ?
